Concern Around Revocation of TPS Among Salvadoran Families Underlines the Need for Today’s Immigrants to Exercise their Rights, Says the Law Offices of Henry A. Posada

The Los Angeles-based immigration lawyer comments on a recent article that, while there are some hopeful signs, immigrants will have to navigate a system that is only going to become more complex for some time.

LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) February 09, 2018

A January 9th article on ABC7News reports on the plight of Salvadoran immigrants in the face of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) revocation of temporary protected status (TPS) for individuals from the nation of El Salvador. Los Angeles area immigration attorney Henry A. Posada says that, with all the understandable anxiety associated with today’s immigration landscape, immigrants still have reason to stay hopeful and explore all of their legal avenues.

Mr. Posada says that the type of situation described in the ABC7News article, in which a Texas-based Salvadoran immigrant with a large family and an IT job, describes his fears of losing his career and contact with his family in the wake of the TPS reversal, is all too common. The attorney adds that many other individuals and families are faced with similar fears of deportation for numerous other reasons, but they should nevertheless try to carry on with their lives in as normal a manner as possible, albeit cautiously. For example, Mr. Posada notes that, even as the fate of DACA (aka, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) hangs in the balance in congress, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced that it is continuing to accept deferred action extension requests from young people who came into the country as children (i.e., Dreamers) for the time being.

It goes beyond that, adds Mr. Posada. He notes that immigrants benefit from certain basic rights and it is important that families and individuals know their rights and options they may have. The attorney adds that, in California, even immigrants who might seem to be facing insurmountable odds – i.e., individuals with criminal convictions in their backgrounds – may have access to a legal path known as post-conviction relief. This recent addition to the state penal code makes it possible for some immigrants to challenge past convictions and protect themselves from possible deportations.

All in all, Mr. Posada says that, while the legal situation has undoubtedly grown more complex for immigrants over the last twelve months, immigrants still have access to some promising legal pathways, particularly in California. At the same time, they need the assistance of competent legal counsel that is able to provide guidance.

Readers who are concerned about their own legal status or that of a loved one are invited to contact the Law Offices of Henry A. Posada at (562) 904-9080. They can also see the firm’s web site at http://www.hposadalaw.com. Reported by PRWeb 2 hours ago.

1,100 students, 5 schools, many Lessons in a Lunchbox: Benco Family Foundation shares dental hygiene message

Pittston, Pennsylvania, Feb. 09, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

Elementary School Principal Melissa Myers introduced 280 second and third graders to a few visitors in the Heights Murray Elementary School cafeteria Thursday, February 1.

Cheers of excitement quieted to a dull roar as a petite woman, clad in a white dental coat embroidered with an oversized carrot pocket led the discussion at the second of five Wilkes-Barre Area School District elementary schools visited that day in partnership with the nation’s largest privately-owned distribution company, Benco Dental.

Dr. Winifred J. Booker, CEO of the Children’s Oral Health Institute, traveled to Northeast Pennsylvania from Owings Mills, Maryland with Program Director Chiquita Veney, to share a message and a bright orange lunchbox concept that she had created more than 20 years ago.

“Lessons in a Lunchbox teaches the child independence; therefore, it provides her or him the ability to brush and floss using the dental kit, the carrot case, and the lunchbox,” Dr. Booker said, referencing the program she developed which features around an ingeniously crafted carrying case, designed to teach elementary school children the importance of dental hygiene.

Before each child received the bright lunchbox of treasures -- a plastic carrot filled with a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and a rinse cup -- the group viewed two “Peanuts” films about proper brushing and flossing techniques.

During Lessons in a Lunchbox, the children learn the following: flossing, brushing and fluoride, healthy dietary choices, good eating habits, and about careers in dentistry.

All hands on deck to demonstrate and distribute included students from University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, members of the Wilkes University Pre-Dental program, volunteers from Benco Dental, and Judy Hislop, an 11-year dental hygienist for the Wilkes-Barre School District.

The 1,100 lunchboxes included information in English, Spanish, and braille, and were donated to children in five Wilkes-Barre Area School District elementary schools by the Benco Family Foundation, the family-owned dental distribution company’s charitable arm.

Rebecca Binder, executive director of the Benco Family Foundation, “Our foundation helps support access to dental care and dental health projects and programs across the country. It’s important because everybody deserves to have access to good, high-quality dental care.”

“I believe the most valuable aspect of Lessons in a Lunchbox is that it puts the most essential parts of oral health all in one spot,” said 24-year-old dental student Jasmine Faldu of Barnegat, New Jersey.

Fourth year University of Pennsylvania dental student, Najm Alanbari, shares high points of his experience.

“My favorite moment of the day was sitting down among the students and watching how they were paying such close attention to the screen. I feel like it will make changes.”

“Lessons in a Lunchbox is a creative and innovative way of teaching children how to take care of their teeth, while being hands-on,” said Victoria Bilski, of Wilkes-Barre, a sophomore student in the Pre-Dental program at Wilkes University, who volunteered at the event.

In regard to volunteerism, Connie Dombroski, Director of Health Science and Student Success at Wilkes University, said, “I tell dental students to access local dental offices and use their family and social networks to see what volunteer opportunities are out there.”

New Love: Mama Penguin Welcomes Her New Valentine Chick at Moody Gardens

$

Galveston, Texas, Feb. 09, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

*GALVESTON, Texas (February 9, 2018)**—* Love is in the air at Moody Gardens. A King penguin chick hatched earlier this week is being well cared for by its single mother and is the newest addition to the Aquarium Pyramid.

“This is certainly an exciting way to kick off the month of love with Valentine’s Day just around the corner,” said Assistant Curator Diane Olsen. “We completed the renovation of our Aquarium Pyramid last year, including tweaking the exhibit to provide the best environment possible for the birds’ breeding success and this just shows that all that dedication has paid off.”

Kings penguin mating season usually begins with a series of courtship rituals including different callings and “parading.” King penguin males work to impress females by standing tall and showing off their physique. Females choose the male they like and they will call and parade with each other before mating. King penguins incubate their eggs on their feet, so no nest is needed.

Typically once an egg is laid both the male and female will stay with the egg and take turns incubating it; however this was not the case with this particular chick and penguin mom Simone. This three-year-old penguin is a first-time mother who came to Moody Gardens a year ago from Sea World San Antonio and nurtured the egg by herself until it hatched. The mother continues to rear the chick on her own, leaving all to wonder who and where the father is.

“Simone is doing a doing a great job caring for this chick. While we are keeping a watchful eye on it and her I have full confidence that she will continue to take excellent care of her chick,” Olsen said. King Penguin eggs usually take about 54 days to hatch and the chick will become full grown after about 10 months.

The arrival of the new chick comes just as some of the Aquarium Pyramid’s newest residents, the Humboldt penguins, are starting their mating season. Humboldt penguins are warm-climate penguins that live in Southern Hemisphere waters off the coast of Chile and Peru.

Humboldt breeding season usually occurs in the fall, which is spring in their native Southern Hemisphere, but since they are on Northern Hemisphere time their mating season is occurring now.

“We have the nest boxes ready and nesting materials out for them in their exhibit, and now the rest is up to them,” Olsen said, as biologists have observed some burrowing activity. “While it’s too early to tell if anything will come of it, it is certainly encouraging to see this kind of behavior among these birds since this is their first year in their new home here at Moody Gardens.”

Now that we have a new penguin to love in the exhibit, the next step is choosing a name. Stay tuned to Moody Gardens social media where a poll will be posted allowing visitors to choose between named selected by the Moody Gardens Penguin Biologists.

Moody Gardens Aquarium Pyramid is one of the largest and most diverse aquariums in Texas. In addition to the King penguins, five other species including Gentoo, Chinstrap, Macaroni, and Rockhopper penguins also call the South Atlantic Exhibit home. The warm-climate Humboldt penguins live in a new exhibit right next door to their chilly-aired friends. With over one million gallons of water, the building houses marine life from five distinct environments and the collection includes not only penguins but sting rays, sharks, seals and sea lions as well as several different species of fish.

USCCB praises disaster relief policy for churches

Washington D.C., Feb 9, 2018 / 03:00 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The USCCB issued a statement Friday praising the early morning passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act, which, in addition to preventing a government shutdown, also codified into law a new FEMA policy that would allow churches and other houses of worship to apply for disaster relief funds.

The policy was developed by FEMA in January, after three Texas churches damaged by hurricanes sued the government claiming discrimination.

As houses of worship--including churches, synagogues, and mosques--are often directly involved in the recovery effort after a natural disaster, it makes sense that they too are able to receive federal assistance with rebuilding, said a statement from  Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, chairman of the Committee for Religious Liberty, and Bishop Joseph C. Bambera, chairman of the Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs.

"We applaud Congress for including provisions in the Budget Act that direct the Federal Emergency Management Agency to make disaster relief assistance available to houses of worship on the same terms as other nonprofit entities. These provisions ensure that houses of worship are treated fairly,” said the bishops. Reported by CNA 3 minutes ago.
