“One of the main factors behind our decision to join the project was the fact that it’s a collaborative effort among several of our sister companies in the industry,” says Steele. “We share regional and industry content in half the magazine, and by combining our circulation we enjoy lower production costs than if we were publishing individual newsletters. A Texas man who was reportedly caught in a traffic violation by a speed camera is fighting back, with an appeal that cited several constitutional arguments and even a complex mathematical formula.

The unidentified man, pleading not guilty to the ticket he was issued, says he received a letter claiming he was speeding in Plano, Texas, on March 20, the Daily Mail reported.

In Plano, appeals to traffic violations are required to be heard in court. He then suggests that his fine be dropped “out of respect for taxpayers, and my desire that their hard earned money not be wasted in such proceedings.”

The letter was posted to Reddit under the title “This is how my brother tries to get out of a speeding ticket,” according to TheBlaze.

He proceeds to write that all charges should be dropped, citing that the 6th Amendment gives him the right to face his accuser, which in this case, is a camera. The man also argues that the government has no way to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, and he’s neither under legal obligation to name someone else as guilty nor required – under the 5th Amendment – to implicate himself.

He goes on to ask for “evidence the prosecution may have of my involvement in the ‘offense,’” including camera maintenance records and for the traffic light at the intersection in which the camera recorded him.

The man also argued that a video that shows the yellow light at the intersection only lit up for 3 seconds, 50 percent less than the safe what is required for 40 mph zone, as recommended by the Institute for Transportation Engineers.

Included in his letter was a mathematical formula the ITE used to make its recommendation, which was done “to ensure pedestrian safety and adequate time to stop safely.”

The result of the man’s appeal was unknown, the Daily Mail reported.

True Detective and the Satanic Panic

0
0
I took my time finishing the final episodes of True Detective. The twists and turns demand contemplative viewing, at least until the end. The detectives have spent eight episodes piecing together the identity of a serial killer whose devil-worshipping, ritualistic activities seemed to implicate major Louisiana politicians and a wide network of people and institutions. But it comes down, as these things always do, to a thrilling fight scene. Detective Rust Cohle has spent eight hours of television using his head to follow the murderer's trail and wax philosophical. In the end, he uses his head more literally, thrusting it repeatedly to knock the bad guy off his feet.

In a recent interview, the show's creator Nic Pizzolatto hinted that the story might have a real-life inspiration. Numerous articles followed, quoting reports from 2005 on the case of a Louisiana pastor named Louis Lamonica Jr. who was convicted of raping his two sons and accused of weird and wild Satanic activities.

Lamonica is still in prison. Maybe he's guilty, but his case has a lot of red flags.

I spent much of the last year reporting a story for the Texas Observer on the case of the San Antonio Four, a group of women who were accused of bizarre and brutal sexual crimes against the 7- and 9-year-old nieces of Elizabeth Ramirez in the early 1990s . Ramirez was considered the ringleader in rituals of rape and torture (the women are lesbians, which only added to the suspicion that they were capable of such things). The doctor who examined the victims wrote in her notes, "This looks Satanic."

The San Antonio Four were vilified and locked away in Texas prisons until this past November, when years of work by activists, journalists and lawyers culminated in a judge's decision to free the women. Their case, it was widely noted, was one of the last of a massive wave of cases throughout the 1980s and 1990s throughout the country in which doctors, prosecutors, police and social workers became convinced that a wave of Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA, as it was known) was sweeping the country, particularly in day care centers. All of the True Detective material was there: animal masks, sacrifices, sex with children, sex with animals, incantations with candles in the woods, etc.

"When dealing with home-run records and financial opportunities, a reliable rule to follow is this: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," Michael Hall wrote for Texas Monthly when the San Antonio Four were released. "When dealing with child-sex-abuse allegations, a reliable rule to follow is this: if it sounds too bad to be true, be very, very skeptical."

In all of these cases, no physical evidence was ever found. Many of the kid victims grew up to retract their accusations. Skeptical journalists like Debbie Nathan, co-author of the book Satan's Silence, found that bad interviewing techniques had been used on highly suggestible children.

Most of the men and women accused of those crimes have been freed. The New York Times recently ran a short film that makes this "hysteria" look like a shameful relic on the order of the Salem witch trials.

A shameful relic, that is, of the 1980s and the 1990s. Lamonica's conviction was in 2005.

Satanic ritual abuse cases were mostly discredited by the time Lamonica's conviction came along. At the very least, his case deserves an ample amount of skepticism.

Sadly, it's hard to find. Erin Gloria Ryan at Jezebel copy-pastes a description of the case and simply writes "Holy. Fucking. Shit." before comparing the details to True Detective's plot. She doesn't profess to be a reporter, but checking your skepticism at the door of shock value is never good. Then there's Steven Ward at The Daily Beast, who years earlier was a newspaper reporter sent to Lamonica's town. He spends one tiny paragraph on Lamonica's defense, mostly reprinting the moral outrage of prosecutors. The case, he writes, "is a story that proves once again that the monsters we should be scared of most are the ones that live right next door." It's a cheap shot at evoking the character Rust Cohle's philosophical musings, covering up a shocking lack of the kind of skepticism we should expect from reporters.

We may have for the most part moved past the Satanic abuse panic, but the popularity of True Detective suggests why we may have been so primed for the Satanic abuse hysteria in the first place. We all love a good story. Reported by Huffington Post 1 hour ago.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) April 11, 2014

Self-published author Natalie Tanner, The Educational Tourist, has spent years traveling the world, exploring its secrets, and creating personal memories. Now she is thrilled to include her two children on these adventures. With 15 years teaching experience, Natalie has successfully bridged the gap between traveling with children and creating exciting and educational experiences.

Traditional travel guides include information for adults only - where to sleep, eat, and what to see. This guide on Rome, the first in a series, provides fascinating nuggets of information on Roman history, culture, mythology, geography, art, and more. It also provides parents and teachers a way to expand upon existing educational curriculum by adding the child’s personal perspective to this historic destination.

“I wanted to show from my unique perspective how to enjoy your dream trip while capturing your child’s attention,” says Ms. Tanner. This book not only ensures you will experience the cultural richness of one of Europe’s finest destinations, but also provides a step-by-step guide on how to engage the minds of your youngest companions - avoiding the dreaded ‘I’m bored!’.

Kristi Hynes, mother of 2 boys, exclaimed, “Wow! My kids are fascinated and I no longer have worries about taking them to Rome. The information and activities are such fun! This book will keep us all intrigued!”

Shuffield Grabs Lead At Walmart FLW Tour Event On Beaver Lake Presented By Rayovac

Spencer Shuffield of Bismarck, Ark.,will take a 1 pound, 1 ounce lead into the third day of competition in the four-day event that features 173 of the world’s best bass-fishing anglers competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

ROGERS, Ark. (PRWEB) April 11, 2014

Pro Spencer Shuffield of Bismarck, Ark., brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 13 pounds, 11 ounces to grab the lead on day two of the Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake presented by Rayovac. Shuffield’s two-day cumulative weight of 29 pounds even gives him a 1 pound, 1 ounce lead over second-place angler Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan of Dayton, Tenn., who has a two-day weight of 10 bass worth 27-15 as the tournament heads into the third day of competition. The field is now cut to the top 20 in the four-day event, hosted by Visit Rogers, that features 173 of the world’s best bass-fishing anglers competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

“I caught them quick this morning,” said Shuffield, the son of legendary Arkansas angler Ron Shuffield. “I knew that I was going to have to. There was no breeze and the lake was flat calm. After 10:30 this morning, it was brutal. I caught around 50 keepers yesterday, but today I only had like nine or 10. I can’t tell you how many 2½- to 3-pounders that I saw coming after my bait today. They just wouldn’t bite it. We just didn’t have that breeze to give them that extra oomph.”

Shuffield said that he caught all of his fish on just two baits and that they were the same baits that he used Thursday. He said that he was targeting the transitional banks in Beaver Lake, looking for a specific type of rock and scouring the creeks for areas that “look right.”

“I’m just covering water,” Shuffield said. “The fish are still in the exact spots that I found them in during practice. The smallmouth just would not bite at all for me today, though. They’ve been the key fish for me every day, even in practice. Today I weighed in one largemouth and four spotted bass.

“The fish are still making their move in, it’s just that we didn’t have the wind today to make them bite,” Shuffield went on to say. “Tomorrow I see that the wind is supposed to blow pretty good again. I think it could get really crazy. I can’t wait.”

Arey Takes Lead At Walmart FLW Tour Event On Beaver Lake Presented By Rayovac

The North Carolina professional angler will take a 2-pound, 8-ounce lead into the fourth and final day of competition in the event that features 173 of the best bass-fishing anglers from around the world competing for the top prize of $125,000.

ROGERS, Ark. (PRWEB) April 12, 2014

FLW Tour pro Matt Arey of Shelby, N.C., brought the largest five-bass limit of the entire tournament to the scale Saturday weighing 16 pounds, 4 ounces to grab the lead after day three of the Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake presented by Rayovac. Arey’s three-day total of 15 bass for 43 pounds, 10 ounces gives him a 2 pound, 8 ounce lead over second-place angler Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan of Dayton, Tenn., who has a three-day weight of 15 bass worth 41-2 as the tournament heads into the final day. Only the top 10 pros will advance to the final day of competition in the four-day event, hosted by Visit Rogers, that features 173 of the world’s best bass-fishing anglers competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

“It’s great to be leading, but I’d almost rather be one ounce behind in second place so I wouldn’t have to deal with the pressure,” said Arey, who has two previous top-5 finishes at Beaver Lake in FLW Tour competition. “I’ve never been leading a big event going into the final day, but I’ve never felt as good as I do right now about a tournament in my life.”

Arey said that he has been starting out each morning fishing near Prairie Creek, then moving up the White River and targeting the staging prespawn largemouth.

“My fish are replenishing,” Arey said. “I’m catching fish off of the exact same transitions where I caught them in previous days and they’re solid white, so I know that they are just coming up. I’ve had most of my weight by 11 a.m., but I’ve been trying to sustain that mid- to low-teens average because that is pretty good this time of year. I’ve got a little bit of a pattern, but it’s only working in a few select areas.

“I’ve been averaging seven or eight keeper largemouth each day and four to six keeper spotted bass,” Arey continued. “Of the 15 bass that I have weighed in, 14 of them have been largemouth. It’s not a big secret – I’m catching most of my fish on a jig. I’m rotating between two or three different baits, but the jig has been key for me.”

“I’m going to do the same thing tomorrow,” Arey went on to say. “I’m going to start near Prairie Creek and hopefully catch a few fish early to help settle the nerves. Then, I’m going to work my way up the river and just pick it apart. I’m going to pound it tomorrow and I know that I have to catch them again.”
