VASIMR Rocket May One Day Send Humans To Mars In Just 39 Days

A new type of rocket that could send humans to Mars in less than six weeks instead of six months or longer may be one step closer to reality.

NASA has selected Texas-based Ad Astra Rocket Company for a round of funding to help develop the Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket, or VASIMR. The new rocket uses plasma and magnets, not to lift spacecraft into orbit but to propel them further and faster once they've escaped the planet's atmosphere.

“It is a rocket like no other rocket that you might have seen in the past. It is a plasma rocket," Dr. Franklin Chang-Díaz, a former shuttle astronaut and CEO of Ad Astra said in a video describing the rocket. "The VASIMR engine is not used for launching things into space or landing them back but rather it is used for things already there. We call this ‘in-space propulsion.'"

While missions near Earth would be able to use solar energy to power the rocket, a mission to Mars would require something far more powerful -- most likely nuclear power, which the company has called "an ideal power source in space."

In ideal conditions, the rocket could propel a spacecraft to Mars in just 39 days.

So far, a non-nuclear prototype has been able to fire for less than a minute at a time:

(Story continues below video.)The NASA contract, worth about $10 million over three years, would go toward creating a prototype that could operate at high power for a minimum of 100 hours, the company said in a news release.

The project is being funded as part of the space agency's Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships program. The goal is for the prototype to reach a technology readiness level (TRL) greater than 5 on NASA's 9-level scale.

A level 5 is described by NASA as:
*TRL 5 System/subsystem/component validation in relevant environment:* Thorough testing of prototyping in representative environment. Basic technology elements integrated with reasonably realistic supporting elements. Prototyping implementations conform to target environment and interfaces.
“We are thrilled by this announcement and proud to be joining forces with NASA in the final steps of the technology maturation,” Chang-Diaz, who took part in seven shuttle missions, said in a news release. “We look forward to a very successful partnership as we jointly advance the technology to flight readiness."

An image provided by the company shows a schematic view of the VASIMR:

Critics have called VASIMR unrealistic, with Mars Society president Robert Zubrin saying last year that to bring humans to Mars, the rocket would need "nuclear electric power systems with 10,000 times the power and 1/100th the mass per unit power as any that have ever been built." PCS Bail Bonds, Tarrant County’s Premier Bail Bond Service, Weighs in on Trial Initiative to Build Trust Between Police Officers and the Community

PCS Bail Bonds, Fort Worth, Texas’ most trusted bail bond service, is weighing in on the trial initiative by the U.S. Department of Justice to build trust between police officers and the communities they serve.

Fort Worth, TX (PRWEB) April 06, 2015

PCS Bail Bonds (http://www.PCSBailBonds.com), Fort Worth, Texas’ most trusted bail bond service, is weighing in on the trial initiative by the U.S. Department of Justice to build trust between police officers and the communities they serve.

The Fort Worth police department was one of five chosen by the U.S. Department of Justice to participate in a new pilot program. The focus of the program, the National Initiative for Building Trust and Justice, is analyzing how these departments interact with their respective communities. (Source: “Fort Worth In Trial Program To Help Build Community Trust,” CBS DFW web site, March 12, 2015; http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2015/03/12/fort-worth-in-trial-program-to-help-build-policecommunity-trust/.)

“I think it can only be a positive if the goal is to advance the relations between police officers and the community,” says Paul Schuder, owner of PCS Bail Bonds. “If you look across the entire country right now, that relationship appears strained in some communities and it’s leading to some tension.”

Schuder explains that the tension comes following a year in which officers made what many considered questionable decisions in regards to the alleged shootings of unarmed civilians who were considered threats. Cases of this occurring include Ferguson, Atlanta, and Forth Worth’s home state of Texas. (Source: Lockwood, J., “Protest Over Grapevine Shooting of Unarmed Man,” March 22, 2015 http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Hundreds-Protest-Grapevine-Police-Shooting-of-Unarmed-Man-297184251.html.)

However, some Fort Worth residents are more open to the idea than others. One resident said they “don’t trust the police,” and “don’t know what it’s going to take,” to change their mind, while another had a more positive outlook, stating if police just knew how to talk to citizens, it would solve a lot of problems. (Source: “Fort Worth In Trial Program To Help Build Community Trust,” CBS DFW web site, March 12, 2015; http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2015/03/12/fort-worth-in-trial-program-to-help-build-policecommunity-trust/.)

“It’s a subject that needs to be addressed and the Department of Justice Department appears to be hoping to make some strides with this initiative,” Schuder concludes. “Fort Worth residents haven’t always had the best relationship with police officers, so this is an opportunity for both groups to take some steps to come together. Because at the end of the day, police are here to protect and serve and they need residents to help them do their jobs more effectively, and that takes trust.”

PCS Bail Bonds has been a part of the Fort Worth community for decades and understands the disconnect between the community and those responsible for policing it. For more information about PCS Bail Bonds or to employ its services, visit http://www.PCSBailBonds.com. Reported by PRWeb 1 hour ago.

Cities, Counties Ask Appeals Court To Let Obama Immigration Programs Move Forward

$

WASHINGTON -- Leaders from more than 70 cities and counties, some going against their states, joined a legal brief filed Monday asking an appeals court to allow President Barack Obama's deportation relief policies to move forward.

"Continuing to delay implementation of the president’s executive action on immigration hurts our economy and puts families at risk," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (D), who spearheaded the effort with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (D) as part of Cities United for Immigration Action, said in a statement.

"Cities are where immigrants live, and cities are where the president's executive action will be successfully implemented," he continued. "Our cities are united, and we will fight for the immigration reform this nation needs and deserves -- whether in the courtroom, in Congress, or in our communities. Make no mistake about it: our voices will be heard."

Obama's plan to expand deferred action for undocumented immigrants has been stalled in the courts since mid-February, after a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction while considering a lawsuit challenging the policies' constitutionality.

Under the policies Obama announced in November, as many as 5 million undocumented immigrants with longstanding ties to the U.S. may be able to stay and work temporarily.

Twenty-six states, led by Texas, filed the lawsuit, arguing the relief programs would cause them harm and violate the Constitution. They've won support from some Republican members of Congress and governors.

But 14 states and the District of Columbia, including some led by Republicans, filed an amicus brief, saying the programs should be allowed to move forward.

Garcetti and de Blasio spearheaded a similar brief in January and received about 30 signatures. The latest brief is backed by mayors, county executives and governments from 73 cities and counties in 27 states. The National League of Cities and the U.S. Conference of Mayors also have joined the brief. The cities and counties are home to 43 million people, according to organizers of the brief.

Some cities signing onto the brief are in states that joined the lawsuit against the president's executive actions. Houston, the most populous city in Texas, is part of the cities' and counties' brief, as is the state capital, Austin. Cities and counties in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arizona, Ohio, Indiana, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Florida and Utah also signed on, even though their states are suing over the executive actions.

The brief argues the executive actions would be good for public safety and the economy in their cities and counties, and would help immigrants integrate and keep families together. The delay in implementing Obama's orders, the brief argues, "harms their cities and counties and all residents thereof by forestalling the critical benefits of that action."

"These benefits are real, and they will accrue day by day," the brief argues.

The Obama administration is seeking a ruling to allow the programs to move forward. The Justice Department filed an appeal last week asking the court to lift the injunction. Reported by Huffington Post 14 minutes ago.

Istation’s mobile apps are particularly beneficial for prekindergarten students who don’t yet have the fine motor skills to operate a mouse or keyboard.

“I love to see tweets and emails from teachers sharing pictures of students using Istation on their mobile devices, and we see positive comments posted every day,” said Istation CEO Richard H. Keeping these students engaged while ensuring they are learning is a challenge, but we are helping schools succeed. Teachers and families know they can trust us. Istation is not only fun; it works.”

Installation and operation of the CBS ArcSafe® RRS-3 PowlVac is quick and simple and does not require any modifications to the existing equipment. PowlVac Type PV style circuit breakers may typically be found in industrial plants, utility and co-generation facilities, and commercial and residential buildings. By automating the racking procedure, the CBS ArcSafe® RRS-3 PowlVac reduces operator fatigue and increases operator safety.

When accompanied by a CBS ArcSafe remote switch operator (RSO) control unit, the RRS-3 reduces the need for arc-flash suits and eliminates all hazardous manual contact with gear during operation from up to 300 feet away. The system is lightweight and portable for hard-to-access areas.

All CBS ArcSafe products are manufactured in the U.S. at our manufacturing facility in Denton, Texas. For more information, visit CBSArcSafe.com or call 877-4-SAFETY.

About CBS ArcSafe®

North American Convenience Store Chain Increases Profits Shortly After Software Implementation

Round Rock, TX (PRWEB) April 06, 2015

Resort Retailers, a North American licensee of 7-Eleven, Inc., located in Park City, Utah, has recently completed its roll out of DataMax’s Envoy Cloud back office software. The implementation has streamlined their operations and greatly increased profits for their 18 stores in a short timespan.

Since the implementation of Envoy Cloud, Resort Retailers has been monitoring and analyzing their profits and growth. William Ohm, Category Manager for Resort Retailers, stated, “The DataMax team has been with us every step of the way. Since implementing the system, we have seen better accuracy, better tracking, better efficiency and better profit!”

William shared a few key areas where Envoy Cloud has helped Resort Retailers improve:

•Profit Increase - Store profits are up double digits, over 18%, from last year.

•Internalized Accounting - Resort Retailers was previously paying over $100,000 a year to outsource accounting. By having Envoy directly integrate with their accounting system, Resort Retailers was able to save over $100,000 per year.

•Retail Pricing Accuracy - Not only does Envoy have the ability to scan items correctly, but manages promotions with ease and control costs on an item-level.

•Transactional Data – Resort Retailers enjoys their ability to have granular data available to mine at any time through a variety of different reporting tools.

•Vendor Accountability – Envoy holds vendors accountable for dead items/stock, cost increases, and product mixes.

•Transaction Efficiency –There are now shorter lines and faster customer service due to the enhanced scanning capabilities.

•Custom Shelf Tag Labels – Resort Retailers found the ability to design/edit their own custom labels very helpful due to their widely dispersed stores and varied label print stock.

•Customer Support –Resort Retailers has referred to DataMax’s support team as "incredible” and notes the short response time and due diligence.
