Texas Education Agency approves newcomer ORIGO Stepping Stones for mathematics state adoption. Stepping Stones was one of three K-5 English/Spanish elementary mathematics curricula chosen.
Austin, Texas (PRWEB) January 13, 2014
Newcomer ORIGO Stepping Stones is one of only three K-5 English and Spanish elementary mathematics curricula approved for state adoption by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The selection is quite a feat for ORIGO Education; the cost of a state adoption process often keeps small publishers from competing. Large publishing houses dominate the U.S. textbook market, but smaller organizations are able to create more innovative curricula, incorporate the latest educational research, and respond to educator feedback.
ORIGO took a risk in pursuing this state adoption, believing that Texas educators would see the value in partnering with an organization dedicated solely to helping students gain a strong foundation in mathematics. After nearly a year of navigating through Texas’s significant vetting process, the gamble paid off.
The TEA evaluated more than 500 submissions for the 2014 Math, Science, & Technology state textbook adoption. The products were required to meet at least 50% of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards to be considered for adoption.
The new TEKS standards bring a more focused approach to mathematics instruction. These standards are more conceptual and less procedural than past standards. This shift in instruction will help students learn how to think rather than what to think by helping them develop a deep understanding of conceptual mathematics.
ORIGO Education is creating additional content to ensure that Stepping Stones fulfills 100% of TEKS requirements. The advantage of Stepping Stones digital curriculum format allows ORIGO to address a gap that the TEA reviewers found with the personal financial literacy standards. ORIGO will launch the additional content before the start of the 2014 school year. Educators are calling ORIGO Stepping Stones “a breath of fresh air” and “the only program that truly teaches conceptual mathematics.”
