Greenberg Traurig’s Gregory C. Cox Earns Texas Board Certification in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law

HOUSTON (PRWEB) January 29, 2014

Gregory C. Cox, an associate in the Houston office of the international law firm of Greenberg Traurig, LLP, has been designated as a board-certified attorney in Oil, Gas and Mineral Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS). The TBLS is the only organization in Texas authorized to certify attorneys in select areas of law. After meeting rigorous selection requirements, Cox is among fewer than 350 Texas attorneys and one of only 94 Houston attorneys who currently hold this credential.

According to its website, the TBLS was established in 1974 by the State Bar of Texas, with continuing jurisdiction under the Supreme Court of Texas. Eligible attorneys must be licensed for a minimum of five years with at least three years of substantial representations in a TBLS practice area. In addition, the Board requires attorneys to submit extensive experience documentation, complete relevant continuing legal education (CLE) seminars, provide references from 10 vetted sources and pass a day-long examination. To retain this designation, Board Certified attorneys complete ongoing CLE courses and periodically furnish additional references.

“Greg’s achievement illustrates his unwavering commitment to excellence,” said Doug Atnipp, co-managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig’s Houston office and co-chair of the firm's national Energy and Natural Resources Practice. “His skill set, knowledge and experience in the energy industry are a real benefit to our clients. Board certification is a high bar, and demonstrates a deep understanding of oil and gas law.”

Cox has wide-ranging experience in the energy industry, having handled energy transactions, acquisitions and divestitures, land titles and due diligence. He has been in the oil and gas business since 2004, as a landman for an independent oil company and as a land negotiator for a large global energy company, prior to becoming an attorney.

Additionally, Cox is a member of the Oil, Gas and Energy Resources Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Young Lawyers Association, the Houston Bar Association, the Oil, Gas and Mineral Law Section of the Houston Bar Association, Young Professionals in Energy and the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. He is licensed to practice law in Texas and North Dakota and before the Supreme Court of the United States.

Cox holds a J.D., cum laude, from South Texas College of Law, where he was a member of the Order of the Lytle and the Dean’s Honor List and was the recipient of the Fred Parks Scholarship and the Academic Merit Scholarship. He received his B.S. in Economics from Texas A&M University.
