Bay Fastening Systems, a Pop Rivet Distributor, Comments on Rumble Strips Installed on Texas Roads to Alert Drivers of Upcoming Construction

After their installation on Texas roadways to alert drivers of upcoming construction, Bay Fastening Systems comments on the safety benefits of road rumble strips.

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) June 03, 2013

On June 3, Bay Fastening Systems, issues a statement about the Texas Department of Transportation’s decision to install rumble strips along stretches of road to warn drivers of road construction ahead of them.

According to an article by WFAA.com, the Department of Transportation in Texas (TxDOT) has spent over $4.3 million to purchase over 3,700 rumble strips. When these rumble strips are driven over, the driver will feel a bump and hear a noise as their tires rub against the strips. They are designed to slow drivers down and alert them of road construction ahead, thus preventing potential accidents from occurring.

The rumble strips are currently being tested on rural highways before they are considered for busier roads. According to the article, “The rumble strips are no more than an inch high and fit together like puzzle pieces. Each section weighs 35 pounds and is held in place by only its weight. Crews can easily drag them into position.”

The article cites Gerald Ullman, a researcher at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, who wrote in an email to local news outlet News 8, “The trend both in Texas and nationally has been a decrease in work-zone crashes. Driver inattention and failure to control speed or driving too fast for conditions are consistently the factors identified as primary contributors to work zone crashes.”

However, the article notes that there has been some public opposition to the new rumble strips. Some commuters and individuals living near the strips complain about the noise. Others have seen drivers attempt to swerve around the strips or come to a stop before they cross it.

Bay Fastening Systems, a distributor of many types of fasteners, including the pop rivet, comments on the new rumble strips being placed on Texas roads. “We support measures that improve the safety of drivers and road construction workers,” says Richard Nappi. “However, we hope that the Texas Department of Transportation considers commuters’ complaints, especially if the rumble strips are causing unintentional distractions to drivers.”
