OREM, Utah (ABC 4 Sports) - Utah Valley University has released the following statement regarding the brawl at the end of last night's basketball game between the Wolverines and New Mexico State:
The incident following Thursday’s game was an unfortunate and sour endnote to an otherwise brilliant performance by both teams. The Western Athletic Conference and both universities are reviewing the incident and gathering information. Any questions should be directed to the WAC office.
Video of the brawl following UVU's 66-61 overtime win over the Aggie can be seen here.
New Mexico State player KC Ross-Miller threw the ball at UVU's Holton Hunsaker as fans were storming the court to celebrate. New Mexico State players got into several scuffles with UVU fans and punches were thrown.
This morning, New Mexico State head coach Marvin Menzies suspended Ross-Miller and released the following statement:
"After reviewing the tape of the game and the events that immediately followed, a decision has been made to immediately suspend KC Ross-Miller. No matter what provoked KC what he did was inexcusable and hence the suspension. It is an honor and a privilege to wear an Aggie uniform and a responsibility comes with that privilege. I will wait until I've had a chance to talk with our conference officials and university administration before any other disciplinary actions may or may not be taken. My initial assessment is that we're looking at two separate components, one being KC throwing the ball at Hunsaker and the other being the altercation between the players and the fans who rushed the floor. I would like to commend my staff for their immediate reaction to engage our players and remove them from the floor. We are currently reviewing several sources of video to accurately assess the situation. Obviously this was a very unfortunate incident and I'm hopeful that we can learn from it moving forward.”
Western Athletic Conference officials are currently reviewing the incident.
Utah Valley, currently in first place in the WAC, next hosts Texas Pan-American Saturday night. Reported by abc4 2 hours ago.
