Texas Democrats' Strategy Tested By Primary

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Battleground Texas, a major Democratic effort aimed at turning one of the reddest states blue, will face its first test in the Democratic primary this week.

After raising $3 million and signing up 12,000 volunteers, organizers hope to see more Democratic participation than in previous statewide elections. Democrats haven't won a statewide race in Texas since 1994, and party officials see increased voter registration as a key to becoming competitive. Though the primary is an early test, the group is primarily focused on improving turnout in the general election in November, when Democrat Wendy Davis is expected to face Republican Greg Abbott in the governor's race.

The Battleground Texas project was formed on the premise that Democrats can take advantage of Texas' changing demographics, especially its growing Hispanic population. Reported by Huffington Post 4 hours ago.
