UHY LLP, a certified public accounting firm, operates its charitable giving activities through UHY Cares, an independent nonprofit 501c3 organization. Cares, which was incorporated over five years ago, was an idea inspired by employees and is volunteer based. Through UHY Cares, employees are able to give back to the community, including helping individuals going through personal emergencies or hardships. UHY Cares Michigan has provided assistance to over 150 local charities and families and continues to grow this list every year.
UHY Cares is a charitable giving program ran by employees and funded through their own personal donations and fundraising activities such as bake sales, jeans days, raffles, and various contests and competitions. As Cares became more popular internally, they began exploring larger-scale events and initiatives tied to Cares that everyone could be a part of – clients, referral sources, friends of the firms, and others. Some of their annual charity events include a Texas Hold’Em tournament, Opening Day party, and golf outing.
UHY LLP also makes various firm-sponsored contributions throughout the year. Last year, UHY LLP Michigan contributed more than $125,000 to local charity and civic organizations. These proceeds are separate from those raised by the UHY Cares program.
The response to UHY Cares’ programs has been overwhelming. So much so they decided to spread the word even further with the help of outdoor branding. Several UHY Cares billboards were positioned across Southeast Michigan in the first quarter of 2014. “Our team has received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from the community, on both professional and personal levels,” says Tom Callan, committee member of UHY Cares Michigan and managing partner of UHY LLP in the Farmington Hills office. “People are excited to learn about UHY’s involvement in the community and commitment to helping others.”
