The Honorable Dr. Rod Paige, United States Secretary of Education (2001-2005), joins the growing list of high-profile supporters for the movement to light the White House blue for an evening during September’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
On why the movement resonated with him, Dr. Paige says, “I am a survivor of prostate cancer, the second leading cancer killer of American men, and I believe lighting blue the White House — the “People’s House” — can be profoundly symbolic. It can lend comfort to those who have lost loved ones to the disease, it can honor America’s over 2.5 million prostate cancer survivors, and it can reach younger men with a message of cancer awareness, prevention and risk reduction. I respectfully ask the President of the United States to light the White House blue.”
“I strongly endorse lighting the White House blue one evening during September’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, just as it is rightfully lit pink one evening during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”
Citizens can support the push by signing an online petition at http://wh.gov/lopd2, which will receive an official White House response when 100,000 supporters have signed. Started by The Blue Cure Foundation, an organization supporting men’s health awareness, Dr. Paige joins a growing list of leaders, celebrities, professional athletes and others who have signed the petition to see the White House lit blue for an evening this September.
Recently, Houston’s Mayor Annise Parker, members of the NFL Houston Texans, media personalities, and more have lent their names and support to promoting the petition. This year, 233,000 men will be diagnosed and 29,480 will die of prostate cancer.
