The phrase "surge" was famously used during the Iraq War when U.S. troops increased their numbers and aggression against insurgents.
Now, the State of Texas is planning its own armed border "surge" against the wave of illegal immigrants, mostly teens and children, who have been pouring over the southern U.S. border for the past few weeks (video below).
According to MySanAntonio.com, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) and Lt. Gov David Dewhurst (R) have agreed on a special budget of $1.3 million per week for the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to conduct a "surge" of law enforcement operations near the border.
KSAT reports that the Texas leaders wrote in a letter to the DPS:
You are directed to plan and execute a surge operation of increased law enforcement in Texas border counties. You are authorized to utilize all existing appropriated funds toward this operation.
“Texas can’t afford to wait for Washington to act on this crisis and we will not sit idly by while the safety and security of our citizens are threatened,” said Gov. Perry in a statement, notes KXAN.
“Until the federal government recognizes the danger it’s putting our citizens in by its inaction to secure the border, Texas law enforcement must do everything they can to keep our citizens and communities safe,” added Gov. Perry.
Gov. Perry didn't specifically mention what kind of "danger" Texas residents are in.
