According to what is being called an “inside” source, Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) will not seek re-election to her seat and will, instead, run for governor of Texas.
Ben Johnson at LifeSiteNews reported that sources told Robert Miller, chairman of the Locke Lord’s Public Law Group, that Davis is aware that she will be a polarizing figure regardless of the position she seeks.
“If she is going to have a tough nationalized race, she would prefer it be for governor,” Miller wrote.
Davis was celebrated by liberal media as a “national hero” when she donned a pair of pink sneakers and led an 11-hour filibuster against passage of a 20-week fetal pain abortion ban. When her filibuster ended abruptly, a rowdy mob of abortion advocates prevented a vote from taking place until Gov. Perry called another special session of the state legislature. The abortion ban bill has now been passed into law.
During a press conference at the National Press Club last Monday, Davis suggested she could run for either re-election or for governor.
The last Democrat Texas governor was Ann Richards, mother of Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards.
Gov. Rick Perry is retiring in 2014, and state Attorney General Greg Abbott has announced a bid for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. LifeSiteNews indicates that polls suggest that Abbott would defeat Davis in a hypothetical race, 48-40.
Miller believes that, even if Davis loses, her campaign could organize a nationwide network of abortion supporters.
“Assuming she runs a credible race, a cabinet or subcabinet position would probably be available to her under President Obama or in a future Clinton administration,” Miller said. “A strong showing in 2014 would position her as the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for Governor or U.S. Senator in 2018, assuming the Democrats have a better shot with each passing election cycle.”
At the National Press Club, Davis channeled House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi when she said that abortion is “sacred ground” and a fundamental necessity for women’s “liberty.” Davis also said that pro-life women or women who support restrictions on abortion “don’t really understand” abortion.
