Texas attorney Kendall Cockrell is no fan of non-lawyer sites drafting legal documents like wills. But instead of fighting them in the courtroom, this lawyer is taking the fight to them, offering attorney-drafted Texas wills online at https://www.TexasWills.com
Beaumont, Texas (PRWEB) August 23, 2013
The popularity of online wills has grown exponentially over the past decade. Surprisingly, the leading businesses providing online wills and other legal documents are not law firms. But one attorney is seeking to change that.
"This site does offer legal advice." That's the first thing that you read when you go to https://www.TexasWills.com, the new site offered by The Cockrell Law Firm, PLLC. Texas lawyer, Kendall Cockrell, is proud of the difference between his site and what he calls LINO sites, Legal In Name Only. "(Website name redacted) is not a law firm," says Cockrell. "Heck, it say they aren't attorneys on the site. Because, by law, it has to."
The Beaumont, Texas attorney goes on to state that Texas legal documents should be drafted by Texas licensed attorneys and law firms, not internet companies based in New York or elsewhere. "Those websites, despite having "legal" or "lawyer" in their names, can't offer legal advice about the legal documents they offer." he says. "How is that good for their customers? And the really bad part? Since they are not practicing law, they have no accountability for the end product they deliver to their customers. Texas lawyers are accountable for the advice and direction they give clients."
Kendall Cockrell's statements are more than a philosophical discussion. He says that the creation of his law firm and the service it provides to clients through http://www.TexasWills.com were born out of his professional experiences. "I have helped hundreds of families navigate the waters of Texas probate law after losing a loved one. One of the saddest situations is when a family member comes in with a do-it-yourself internet will thinking it is sufficient. Then I have to tell them the will doesn't meet all of Texas' legal requirements. Or worse, it doesn't do what their dead loved one wanted it to."
Kendall says the possible shortcomings of do-it-yourself wills can cost an estate hundreds or even thousands of dollars. But he is proud to now offer an alternative. "I really believe that every Texan should have a will," Cockrell begins. "A will is the best way to make sure your estate passes to those you wish to receive it. And since it is a legal document, doesn't it make sense to have a Texas lawyer draft your will for you?"
While most are attracted to the convenience of internet wills, Kendall believes that shouldn't mean sacrificing confidence. He says he is able to provide a basic consultation through TexasWills.com. "You absolutely get a consultation," says Cockrell. "We have put a lot of effort into making sure that our site informs you of every choice you make during the online experience."
This unique experience is why The Cockrell Law firm does not refer to site visitors as customers. "TexasWills.com is not just an internet business. We don't have customers, we have clients." In addition to a lot of great information (see https://www.TexasWills.com/Articles), visitors who agree to become clients get access to specific legal advice about drafting their wills. Additionally, they can email the firm at any time during the process if they have questions at no additional charge.
Kendall Cockrell is licensed to practice law in the State of Texas and has been admitted to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. He is a former Director on the Board of the Jefferson County Young Lawyers Association and is a member of the Jefferson County Bar Association, American Association for Justice, American Bar Association, Texas Trial Lawyers Association, Texas Young Lawyers Association and the Real Estate, Probate, and Trust Law Section of the State Bar of Texas.
