Federal and state law enforcement officials arrested Normangee Police Chief Joseph Ray Navarro today for his alleged role in a methamphetamine trafficking ring.

Navarro is being charged with one count of intentionally exceeding authorized access to a protected computer. Officials claim Navarro used the computer to aid a charged methamphetamine trafficker.

In May of 2013 Navarro ran a background check on a name supplied to him by Normangee resident Antanette Evans.

Navarro’s decision to both have contact with and aid Evans is problematic because on April 26, 2013, Evans was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Despite the charge, Navarro was in contact with and aiding Evans, who remains at large.

If convicted, Navarro will face up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

The on-going investigation of Navarro is being conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation Division, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI.

DEA agents and Deputy U.S. Marshalls assisted with the arrest.
